Greece has been in a financial crisis for quite sometime, and now the citizens of Greece have begun to take this problem into their own hands, because they see the government as incompetent. The Golden Dawn is a vigilante group that is a political party that has conformed and won over the population of Greece in just 3 short months. The Golden Dawn use the fear that immigrants are the cause of the problem, increasing the crime rate in Greece, and taking jobs from the people. Golden Dawn now holds 18 out of 300 seats in Parliament, making it the 5th largest political party, and at the rate it has been growing, it would become the 3rd largest in time for a new election, falling under the previous prime minister, Antonis Samaras, and the Syriza political party. This is similar to if a Chinese emperor were to lose the Mandate of Heaven, in that if the people see that he has lost God's favor, they will rise to overthrow him. I like seeing that these people are able to work together towards a goal, and make a very significant impact, threatening the previous leaders' control. I think that the Golden Dawn deserves a chance, seeing as teh previous leaders of the government have been unable to fix this on going economic problem, and having won over the population, they may be able to do something that the old leaders could not.

I agree that with the Greek economy in shambles, a new political party may be beneficial for the country. The Golden Dawn seems to be adding new ideas to help solve the financial problem, but the fact that they are a violent group leads me to believe that there is a possibility of them doing more harm then good. The article states that the Golden Dawn believes that immigrants are the source of the problem in Greece, and they are willing to go to extremes to keep them out. The article also says that the group has attacked many merchants, some of which are legal citizens. To me, this is not acceptable. It shows that the Golden Dawn is facially profiling people, and not giving them a chance to stand up for themselves. If the violence continues, I believe that the Golden Dawn may bury the Greek economy even further.

ReplyDeleteDespite the fact that the current party in control has not been able to get Greece out of its economic mess, I believe it would be awful and petrifying to have the Golden Dawn party in power. Their views are completely radical and would not in any way benefit the country. The fact that this party denies the holocaust, blames Greek immigrants (legal and illegal) and Jews for their economic problems, blames Jews in general for the European economic crisis, and that they idolize and try to mirror the Nazi party is absolutely despicable and scary. To begin with, this is extreme racism and we all know that these radical views of the Nazi party lead to the holocaust, when 11 million people were murdered. I believe that these economic problems in Greece and the rest of Europe have been caused by internal problems. Instead of accusing minorities and looking for scapegoats, the Greek people should focus on how to fix their problems as a united people. Being Jewish myself, the fact that people still have these radical views scares me and I believe and desperately hope that the Greek people will turn away and ignore these Neo-Nazi right wing extremists.
