Give Social Networks Fake Details

Ms.Witehall, a web security official, tells us to be cautious when giving information to social networking sites. Sites like Facebook ask for our birthday, name, phone number. Then on top of that you can use fore square to show where you are on a map, or show where you graduated from, who your family members are, and other private information. As Andy Smith said, this information can easily be used by criminals against you. I believe it's important to educate the public about the dangers of giving out all of your information on the internet. However, while it seems the safer option to fake your twitter age by a couple years, would you do it? Some social networking sites claim to kick you off if they somehow find out that you have used fake information for your profile. According to Mr. Smith you should never use you're real name or real date of birth unless on government official sites. Would you fake your name on social networking sites just to be safer? Or would you rather take the risk of having your information taken advantage by criminals?

  1. I think that this is a pretty important topic, seeming as social networking sites are so widely used nowadays. Because younger and younger kids seem to be using these, too, i think it's important to educate them just as well. I know I was always taught to not give out real information, but I wonder that in generations to come, when giving out this information seems more acceptable, if those kids will be even more vulnerable. I also don't understand why people are against this topic so much; though it was brought up that she is technically telling you to break the law, she is not telling you to put in false information on government websites, or on websites for tax returns and such. I personally don't think putting fake information for an account for something like Angry Birds will cause any major problems. All in all, I believe this comment is just trying to promote the safety of people on the internet.

  2. i would take the risk and put my name, birthday and other information on social websites such as facebook. i have not had anything bad happen to me so i do not know the dangers that could come with it; but i do see the danger of putting personal information on the internet, it could be taken by someone which is why if you want you should hide your information.
