The topic of gun control in the United States, is a very touchy subject. With recent traumas, people can lead to conclusions that no citizen should have right to bear arms. I disagree. Although I understand that in the wrong hands guns are extremely dangerous, I also see the safety in having the right to own them. This story I watched about the mother in Georgia really shows exactly that. For a brief summery, A mother and her three kids were home when a burglar broke into their home with a crowbar in the daytime. In response to the invasion she took the .38 revolver (that her and her husband kept in a safe in the house) and escaped with her children to the attic. While in hiding she called her husband who instructed him to shoot the intruder if he opened the door to the attic. That is exactly what Melinda Herman did. This heroic story of a Mother protecting her children brings up two very popular augments. The people who are against gun rights can argue topics such as "what if the child were to bring the gun to school?" or other topics mentioned in this article such as owning a gun and not knowing how to use it properly. However, Donnie Herman had taken his wife weeks before to instruct her how to shoot it. Also, I would like to point out again that the handgun was kept in a safe in the house, one can infer that the children did not know the combination to. It is true that people can use their possession of guns for tragic opportunities such as suicide and homicide; but my argument is if someone has the means to kill that is what they will do. I do not believe that Melinda Herman would have been able to protect her family without that handgun. Of course we do not know for sure what the intruder would have done if he had found the mother and children. However, I still believe Melinda did the right thing. Do you? Do you believe in The Second Amendment?

I agree with you completely. Although it may seem wrong to have weapons around the house with kids, the parents most likely are cautious that they will not have anything to do with it. I think that any person has a right to use a gun if an intruder or other person is in their property. Even if it can sometimes end up disastrous if misunderstood, it is still better to have defense, especially in a case like this.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with both Tania and Janelle. Guns may be dangerous, but they are also can help people defend themselves and their families. One of the things I feel they should do in order to hep prevent disasters. For example, they could do more extensive background research, like a psych evaluation, in order to make sure the person purchasing a gun is emotionally stable. I feel like people should be able to defend themselves with a gun, but there should be an extensive process before giving someone a gun license.
ReplyDeletei agree aswell, in my opinion anyone should be able to own a firearm but also be limited on its capability. handguns in my opinion are not needed in someones life but if wanted by someone who passes all the mental tests and receives the certification they should be able to get one. but on that matter guns such as semi-automatic rifles should not be allowed to be owned by a normal citizen because even if they were not to do an illegal act it could be done with that weapon by someone else. when we hear about the shootings that are occurring the main reason in my opinion is happening because of the person. guns don't kill people, people kill people.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this story too on how people should be allowed the right to bear arms to some extent. I think people should have limited power to use guns, if anything a handgun. I think this woman did the right thing in protecting her children by using their handgun for protection against a man whose intentions were to break and take objects that were not his. It was her and her husbands right to have a gun in the house to use only if their protection which is what they did exactly. But, that should be the only purpose for the handgun and they also did that too. They as well kept it in a secure place so that their children could not find out where it was and if they did they could not unlock the safe.
