Russian anti-U.S. adoption bill advances, goes to Putin for signing

Because the anti-U.S. Adoption bill has passed the upper and lower house of Russian parliament, it only needs to be signed by President Vladimir Putin in order to become law. I believe this bill could be harmful to the United States and Russia’s delicate relationship. By banning the United States from adopting Russian children, Russia expresses distrust of the United States. This could have significant political impacts beyond the scope of the inter-country adoption. It may be detrimental to the children of Russia as well because they will not have the opportunity and freedom that comes from being raised in the United States. Although Russian officials argue American parents are abusing their adopted children, the United States has adopted 60,000 children from Russia in the past 20 years. Trusting someone with a child is the highest form of confidence one could show. This pattern of distrust between the two countries seems to be reoccurring again. Although the atmosphere is nothing compared to the hatred and fear present during the cold war, I wonder if we will ever be able to completely trust Russia and Russia able to say the same about us?
