Killings in Kenya, Africa.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-19542570

There has been a lot of violence in Kenya, Africa lately. In the past month, almost 100 people have been killed. Red Cross is saying that it is too risky for people to go collect the body's from the streets. It's sick. These people are being killed for no reason, and they can't even go carry their bodies out of the debris and properly bury them with their dignity. If these killings/bombing/fires are really due to the controversy being caused by the 2013 Elections in Africa, then why don't they try to keep the elections quiet for a few weeks until people calm down? It doesn't seem like the police have much authority in Africa, especially Kenya and the surrounding areas. Does that have to do with money? lack of education? or maybe just position in society? Overall, I just find that these random acts of violence happening in Kenya right now are just ridiculous. I can't see the reasons behind them, and they just appear to be outright assaults/murders.

  1. These murders are definitely sick, but I do believe that there is reason behind them. I completely agree with your point about the lack of authority by the police in Africa; I think these murders are a result of little stability in Kenya and surrounding areas.

I do not entirely blame the Red Cross for prohibiting people from collecting bodies. If random killings are occurring in public areas, it is safest for people to stay out of the streets where they could too be killed.

The violence in Kenya is horrible, but not completely random. Murders like these are happening in other regions around the world, such as Somalia and Syria, due to rebellion and lack of control. In addition to possible lack of authority, there are disputes among different Kenyan communities. There is reason behind the violence. I do not think Kenya is totally at fault. Surrounding countries, for example Somalia, are having an impact on Kenya. I agree that politics definitely have something to do with the violence. Elections cause a lot of conflict. People are probably committing murder out of rage and disagreement. I fear that these outbreaks of murder in Kenya could trigger more violence in other countries.

Like we discussed in class about empires, there is competition for resources. In the beginning stages of ancient empires, groups wanted to gain control over land where there were resources. In Kenya now, different ethnic groups exist in the same areas, both wanting control of water and farmland. The tension in this area is not relatively new; communities have been in dispute over land for some time.

Do you think that the violence is more a result of internal issues or from other cases of violence and tension in surrounding African countries?
